ASTM F67 is the material standard that specifies the requirements for unalloyed titanium used in the manufacture of surgical implants. ASTM F67 covers commercially pure (CP) titanium, including Gr1, Gr2, Gr3 and Gr4, which is valued for its exceptional corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and formability, but offers lower strength. It is commonly used for non-load-bearing or low-load medical implants.

Key Characteristics

Highest ductility, lowest strength. Excellent formability.

Note: The modulus of elasticity for pure titanium is about half that of stainless steel or cobalt-chromium alloys, and significantly lower than Ti6Al4V, which reduces stress shielding.

 

Medical Applications

 

Due to its lower strength but high biocompatibility, ASTM F67 pure titanium bars are used in specific types of implants.

  • Dental Implants: Grade 4 ASTM F67 pure titanium bars are very commonly used for the main body (fixture) of dental implants, where its high strength within the CP family is sufficient for the masticatory loads.
  • Cranio-Maxillofacial (CMF) Implants: Plates, meshes, and screws for reconstructive surgery of the skull and face. The ability to contour the material is a major advantage.
  • Pacemaker Cases and Implantable Device Housings: Its excellent corrosion resistance protects sensitive electronics.
  • Orthopedic Applications: Bone screws (particularly in non-load-critical areas), surgical mesh, and wire.
  • Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Implants: Such as ossicular replacement prostheses in the middle ear.
