Grades & Standards

 

Not all titanium is equal. For spinal applications, two alloys dominate, both offering the required strength and biocompatibility.

Both Ti-6Al-4V ELI (ASTM F136 / ISO 5832-3) and Ti-6Al-7Nb (ASTM F1295 / ISO 5832-11) are commercially supplied as bar/rod feed-stock for spinal screws, rods and plates.

Ti-6Al-7Nb is explicitly promoted as a vanadium-free, higher-biocompatibility alternative for long-term spinal fixation.

Note: Commercially Pure (CP) Titanium Grades 1-4 are generally not used for major load-bearing spinal rods due to their lower strength, but they may be used in cervical plates or non-load-bearing applications.

 

Typical Bar Sizes

 

  • Hot-rolled/forged round bar: Φ 5.5 – 94 mm (0.218 – 3.70 in.) in straight lengths or cut billets; cold-finished or centreless-ground to h6-h9 tolerance on request .
  • Common spinal-rod diameter ordered: Φ 5.5 mm and 6.0 mm, supplied in annealed or STA condition, Ra ≤ 0.4 µm, straightness ≤ 1 mm m⁻¹
